How to organise website images so every section tells the right story

An attractive image can still be the wrong image for a section. A video-editing graphic on an SEO page creates unnecessary confusion, while a stretched photograph can weaken an otherwise careful layout. Organising assets by purpose is a simple way to make the whole website feel more considered.

How to organise website images so every section tells the right story

Create a content-to-image list

List the main sections and write what each image should explain. Match website examples to development, search visuals to SEO and editing footage to video services. Mark decorative images separately. This small inventory makes it easier to spot mismatches before they are spread across several pages.

Use honest descriptions

Image descriptions should reflect what the picture actually shows. A desk with a laptop should not be described as a team meeting if no people are visible. If a visual is illustrative, avoid presenting it as completed client work. Accuracy helps both accessibility and the visitor’s understanding of the page.

Protect the focal point

Choose a crop that keeps important faces, products or text visible. Some visuals need different framing on phones. Avoid using cover cropping for graphics that contain essential written information unless the full message remains available elsewhere. Check the final displayed size rather than only the source file in an image editor.

Prepare sensible file sizes

Keep the original assets for future edits and create web versions sized for the layout. Use compression carefully and inspect small details afterward. Add width and height where appropriate to reserve space. Images below the first screen can often load later, while a meaningful opening image may need earlier priority.

Review the whole page together

Look at the page as a sequence, not a collection of isolated cards. Check whether neighbouring visuals repeat too closely or change style abruptly. Keep captions and alternative text consistent with the chosen image. A final mobile pass often reveals cropping and spacing problems that were easy to miss on a laptop.

A quick checklist

  • Match every image to its section.
  • Use accurate alternative text.
  • Check crop, dimensions and file size.
